Since 1 September 2011, non-EU citizens living in Germany have been generally issued with an electronic residence permit, an electronic residence card or a permanent electronic residence card. In most cases, the online ID function is activated, enabling online identification of the holder.

The image can be downloaded free of charge and used in the context of reporting and information for publications in print media, film and television as well as in online and multimedia publications.

The ID card in credit‑card format was introduced on 1 November 2010. It comes with a chip that enables the online ID function, so that the card can be used online to identify the holder and use digital services.
