Six figures – and what they mean

The Bundesdruckerei Group is particularly committed to saving resources, not just energy, water and fuel, but also paper, ink and other materials. That’s because we want to protect the climate. But we also have to reduce costs and work efficiently. At the same time, we take a holistic view of sustainability and are particularly committed to supporting our employees in their personal development and offering them a family-friendly working environment.

We have set ourselves some ambitious goals. We analyze our consumption, identify potential for savings and define the correct measures. The management systems we use check our approaches each year and also undergo annual audits conducted by external bodies. What’s more, we actively involve our employees in the future development of the Group. The next section presents six exemplary figures from our current report on the German Sustainability Code (2019) and describe how we achieve this.


100 percent green electricity

We need a lot of electricity to run our production facilities and server infrastructure. In 2019, Bundesdruckerei, D-TRUST and Bundesdruckerei International Services alone consumed around 24.2 gigawatt-hours of electricity – that’s as much as a small town with a population of less than 17,000 uses in a year.

To protect the climate and the environment, we are working hard to keep electricity consumption stable while increasing sales. We are also using electricity from renewable sources, i.e. from solar, hydro and wind power. We do not use any electricity from nuclear power stations or power generated using coal, oil or natural gas.

We put our electricity demand out to tender throughout Europe. In 2016, six criteria were defined for Bundesdruckerei, D-TRUST and Bundesdruckerei International Services which the electricity supplier had to fulfil. It was particularly important that the requirements should also help to promote the transition of Germany’s energy system.

  1. The electricity supplier should ensure that it provides 100 percent green electricity.
  2. At least 6 gigawatt-hours of our annual consumption should come from Germany in order to support sustainable producers in this country.
  3. 30 percent of the electricity is to come from plants that are less than six years old.
  4. 50 percent of the electricity purchased is to come from plants that are less than twelve years old.
  5. Our supplier should demonstrate that it promotes the construction of new plants, as this is the only way to increase the proportion of green electricity in Germany’s electricity mix.
  6. The electricity supplier should provide suitable evidence to demonstrate that it meets the above criteria.

It goes without saying that we are determined to improve ourselves further. Thanks to an efficient environmental and energy management system, we can identify the reasons for rising consumption and respond accordingly.

In the tender for the years 2019 to 2021, we included proof of origin as an additional criterion: Electricity generation must be emission-free. It is also important for us that electricity be generated as locally as possible in order to support Germany’s energy transition.

Our goal is to become climate neutral.

20 percent less energy consumption

To reduce our consumption by 20 percent by 2020 compared to 2014, we need to know exactly how much energy we are using and what for. This is why our energy management system has been certified according to ISO 50001 since 2014.

Among other things, we monitor consumption using energy meters and systematically evaluate the results.

Our production systems and building services require the largest share of electricity and heat. This creates the right environmental conditions for both employees and machines and it is where the greatest potential for savings can be found.

We are currently still slightly above the target value, but we are on the right path.

At our headquarters on Kommandantenstraße in Berlin, we have a total of twelve building complexes where we manage around 120,000 square meters. The space there is used for very different purposes – for production, storage and administration. It is extremely time-consuming to record and analyze consumption in as much detail as possible.

  1. We have installed a total of 300 new meters in order to precisely identify where and how much electricity and heat is consumed.
  2. We are investing in smart plant technology that enables us to set up energy-saving rules – for example, to automatically switch off machines and air-conditioning systems.
  3. When we purchase new production technology, we do not just check occupational health and safety, we also ensure that the machines are energy-efficient and reduce the burden on the environment.
  4. We have analyzed production and logistics processes and bundled successive steps spatially in order to shorten distances and thus also save resources and energy.
  5. The state-of-the-art data center, which went into operation in 2013, also helps to reduce energy consumption.
  6. LED lighting is used in all newly constructed or renovated buildings.

We had aimed to reduce our energy consumption by 20 percent by 2020 compared to 2014. Since then, although our sales have increased we have still been able to reduce our energy consumption by seven percent at our site in Berlin.

Our environmental and energy management systems are audited each year. This means that we are continuously improving ourselves and thus also our ability to develop suitable concepts to further optimize performance. Over the coming years, we will also include those Group subsidiaries in which we hold a majority stake in the corresponding management systems.

6,000 tons of CO2

Carbon dioxide emissions are primarily responsible for global warming and climate change. These emissions come from burning fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas or also coal, for instance, in order to heat buildings or enable mobility.

In fact, heating buildings and business trips by employees are the main sources of CO2 emissions at the Bundesdruckerei Group. That’s why we are working hard to become better in these areas. In 2015, Bundesdruckerei, D-TRUST and Bundesdruckerei International Services had already reached their CO2 goal. Our aim is therefore to keep our emissions stable at 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide until 2020 – even with sales on the rise.

We have also set ourselves a further goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by five percent by 2023 compared to 2018 and compensating for the remaining emissions through certified climate protection projects.

By purchasing green electricity, we already succeeded in saving a total of twelve percent in CO2 emissions by 2015 compared to 2011. But we cannot rest on our laurels. After all, when the Bundesdruckerei Group grows, acquires further companies, produces more and employs more staff, this will lead to a counter-effect. We have to steer in a targeted manner.

  1. The Bundesdruckerei Group is determined to reduce emissions, especially from heat procurement which in 2019 accounted for 51 percent of CO2 emissions. In order to reduce district heating and gas consumption, we will optimize the operation of heating systems further.
  2. We encourage our employees to use more videoconferencing between locations and to fly less frequently. In the year under review, business travel accounted 35 percent of our emissions.
  3. We are revising our travel policy for all employees and are giving preference to rail travel over air travel, for example. If a flight is necessary, a direct connection without a stopover should be chosen if possible.
  4. We offer our employees an incentive to choose company cars with particularly low emissions: Hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles are the cars of choice. Our vehicle fleet accounts for almost ten percent of emissions.
  5. The company is working with the non-profit organization ‘Climate without borders’ to compensate for those emissions that cannot be avoided.

We report our greenhouse gas emissions annually according to the principles of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. This protocol classifies emissions into three different categories (scopes). Scope 1 emissions are from mobile and stationary plants and gases. Scope 2 emissions are from purchased electricity, gas and steam. Scope 3 emissions are from upstream and downstream processes; we specifically looked at business travel by air.

In order to keep emissions stable, we can make improvements, particularly in the procurement of heat for the Bundesdruckerei Group. We are also developing a concept for alternative mobility for all employees in an effort to further reduce Scope 3 emissions, which in 2019 accounted for 35 percent of our total CO2 emissions. 

15 percent fewer hazards

We use chemicals to manufacture our products and to maintain our plants. Some of these chemicals are hazardous substances, i.e. they can harm people and the environment. It is our duty to keep the risk to our employees as low as possible and to protect their health and also our environment.

That is why we check the hazardous properties of the substances or mixtures even before they are used, we study the manufacturer's instructions and observe exactly when, where and to what extent our employees are exposed to hazardous substances.

Our aim is to replace as many of these hazardous substances as possible with alternatives that are less harmful to health and the environment. By 2020, the number of hazards actually reported from these chemicals and mixtures is to be reduced by 15 percent.

It has not yet been possible to manage production entirely without hazardous substances. We need certain chemicals, for example, to remove ink from rollers. It is important that we remain in dialogue with manufacturers and continuously look for suitable alternatives.”

Hazardous substances are subject to the industrial safety regulations of the so-called Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV, Gefahrstoffverordnung). We assess the hazard according to the so-called Simple Measures Concept for Hazardous Substances and we develop suitable strategies to reduce this hazard.

  1. As required by the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances, substitution is a top priority for us. We are constantly examining the extent to which chemicals and mixtures that are harmful to health can be replaced by less hazardous alternatives.
  2. We precisely define the work steps in production and take all technical and organizational protective measures. We provide our employees, for instance, with suitable clothing and tools.
  3. Our employees receive comprehensive instructions and training in how to use and dispose of hazardous substances.
  4. We commission renowned research institutes to test the occupational health and safety limits of a hazardous substance and suitable alternatives.
  5. We test the selected alternatives in the production process, take measurements and work with the manufacturers to optimize alternative substances.

We are constantly examining which hazardous substances we can replace with less hazardous alternatives or how we can reduce the amount of substances used. We had set ourselves the goal of significantly reducing the number of hazards in 2019 compared to 2017.

In 2019, the number of entries in the hazardous substances register totalled 123, which is below the originally planned maximum figure of 127. This success motivates us to continue looking for alternatives for substances that are harmful to health and the environment. To achieve this, we are continuously adapting our goal definitions and expanding our database.

11.3 years: Average length of service

For many employees, Bundesdruckerei has been their professional home for decades – at the same time, we are always happy to welcome many new colleagues. The loyalty of our employees is expressed in an average length of service of more than eleven years.

  1. Compliance with all German and European labour law regulations as well as the labour law standards of the United Nations (UN), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the OECD and the UN Global Compact is a matter of course for us.
  2. We have concluded company agreements with the employee representatives regarding social conduct at the workplace, the integration of severely disabled persons or company integration management that go far beyond the required legal standards.
  3. We conduct regular surveys to take into account our employees’ wishes and experience in their everyday work. This gives employees the opportunity to actively participate and to voice criticism and suggestions for improvement.
  4. We use various instruments of personnel development, such as regular performance reviews, to promote our employees individually.
  1. We wish to continue promoting the active participation of our employees in developments within the company. We have, for instance, initiated regular CEO and CFO lunches where our employees can exchange ideas with management over lunch. At our townhall meetings, our employees have the opportunity to find out about current decisions in the company and discuss them directly with executives.
  2. What’s more, we are always looking for new and innovative participation formats in order to involve our employees as much as possible in the future development of Bundesdruckerei.

We actively support the professional development of our employees. We want to maintain and improve the skills of our employees with flexible and individually tailored training opportunities.

  1. We offer a wide range of eLearning courses that employees can use as required and at the time of their choosing. This allows our employees to deepen their knowledge on topics such as leadership or the secure and responsible handling of sensitive data on the Internet.
  2. By offering a vast range of starting points in various specialist and cross-sectional areas, our young professionals can develop their full potential. Our employees can opt for a specialist or management career path.
  3. We actively support our employees in their further training, for instance, by providing financial support for extra-occupational studies, time off for educational purposes or scholarships.
  • We regularly evaluate our training and development schemes and align them with the current topics and work priorities of our employees. 

Environmental management at the Bundesdruckerei Group

For many years now, Bundesdruckerei, D‑Trust and Bundesdruckerei International Services have complied with the requirements of the environmental management standard DIN EN ISO 14001. Embedded in an integrated system, industrial safety and health protection have been successfully confirmed according to BS 18001 OHSAS (which is currently being replaced by ISO 45001) and energy management according to DIN EN ISO 50001. The other companies are now to be systematically integrated into the Bundesdruckerei Group's environmental management system.

German Sustainability Code

Since 2012, the Bundesdruckerei Group has been committed to the German Sustainability Code (DNK). This code makes the company's contribution to the environment, the economy and society both transparent and comparable. By signing the related declaration, the company group declares that it accepts all the criteria that help to ensure entrepreneurial sustainability, for instance, greater use of natural resources.
