Bundesdruckerei cooperates with start-ups for research for the quantum internet
- Bundesdruckerei and the start-ups neQxt and JoS QUANTUM are jointly strengthening digital sovereignty
- Research in cyber forensics against future cyber threats
- Transfer to application: Live demonstration of “Quantum Internet in a Nutshell” at the World of Quantum trade fair
Berlin/Munich, June 23, 2025 – Bundesdruckerei, neQxt, and JoS QUANTUM will demonstrate groundbreaking developments in the field of quantum technologies at World of Quantum. The world's largest trade fair for this technology will take place in Munich from June 24 to 27. The focus of the three German research partners is the "Quantum Internet in a Nutshell" project. An ion trap quantum computer will enable, for the first time, the realistic imitation, research, and testing of quantum-based cryptography on a real quantum system – with direct benefits for the construction and security aspects of a future quantum internet.
The miniature quantum twin of the quantum internet already allows QKD security analyses to be conducted today, taking into account interference, eavesdropping attempts, and imperfect hardware components. Furthermore, it can be used to develop entirely new cryptography and communication methods. "Quantum Internet in a Nutshell" will introduce future users to quantum communication. It offers researchers the opportunity to quickly and easily test proofs of concepts for new applications of the quantum internet.
Bundesdruckerei as a technology company of the German federal government, the quantum computer manufacturer neQxt, and the software and algorithm boutique JoS QUANTUM aim to collaborate primarily on developing the next generation of cryptographic methods based on quantum technologies. This so-called quantum forensics is intended to protect against future cyber threats and actively contribute to data sovereignty in Germany and Europe. Furthermore, the cooperation partners are jointly identifying further use cases for quantum computers and demonstrating their value-added exploitation.
"The goal of our research collaboration is to strengthen Germany's digital sovereignty by developing new, secure, and innovative quantum technologies," says Dr. Kim Nguyen, Senior Vice President Innovations at Bundesdruckerei GmbH. "Together with our innovative partners neQxt and JoS QUANTUM, we are bridging the gap between science, industry, and governance."
The live demonstration of "Quantum Internet in a Nutshell" at the partners' booth A1.539 at World of Quantum allows visitors to design quantum internet networks themselves using drag-and-drop and experience the functionality of quantum computers. There will also be opportunities for direct exchange and participation in interactive presentations.
"Together, we find solutions to highly complex problems, identifying and closing the gaps in hardware and firmware stacks that enable the transfer of quantum technologies into applications," says Dr. Janine Hilder, Chief Scientific Officer at neQxt GmbH. The startup, with locations in Bavaria and Hessen, focuses on the development of mobile quantum computers, among other things.
The partner JoS QUANTUM is committed to developing a sovereign, German quantum computer software stack. "As a cooperation partner, we enable independent access to quantum applications – even for non-experts – through specialized software and a clear user interface," says Dr. Thomas Decker, Chief Technology Officer at JoS QUANTUM GmbH. The Frankfurt-based startup develops software, algorithms, and IP in the field of quantum technology and AI.
