German banknotes - history from 1848

German banknotes are amongst the most secure in the world. For decades, they have been manufactured at Bundesdruckerei on one of the world's most cutting-edge production lines.

Part of these machines was used to produce the security-upgraded DM 50 and DM 200 banknotes. Prior to the introduction of the euro, tried-and-tested security features of German banknotes were enhanced through new security features such as kinegrams and optically variable inks. The experience thus acquired is now being channelled into the production of the euro at Bundesdruckerei.
