The in-house design department at Bundesdruckerei develops products to meet the most demanding aesthetic and security requirements of central banks. As a cultural asset, the banknote always poses a particular challenge, because the culture of an entire country or continent is depicted on a very small space. The designers must also accommodate the security requirements placed on banknotes in the new millennium. Their motto is: "Always one step ahead of the counterfeiter."

The design department at Bundesdruckerei has recently produced complete banknote designs for a number of internationally renowned central banks. Their most outstanding design to date is the latest series for the German Bundesbank, created by  former Chief Designer, Mr Reinhold Gerstetter. His work for the Spanish series of banknotes and collaboration with the Estonian designer Professor Taiger on the new Estonian banknotes has been equally impressive.
