Infrastructures for the future.
More transparency and service for citizens

The introduction of new generations of biometric-based electronic ID documents (November 2005: introduction of the ePassport in Germany, November 2007: integration of fingerprint data in the German ePassport) involves far-reaching changes in public-service infrastructures. Moreover, document holders receiving their documents must be given full access to the data stored in the chip as well as the possibility to personally check this data.

During the course of the ePassport introduction in Germany, Bundesdruckerei equipped 5,500 German passport offices throughout the world with the technical infrastructures needed to issue modern ID documents. Today, our systems enable the authorised agencies and offices to read all ISO-14443-compliant RFID chips as well as any customary chip data and to present this data to citizens on suitable reader units. This means that full data transparency is warranted to citizens with regard to the information that is electronically stored in their documents.
