The citizens' service of tomorrow

Future-orientated solutions for passport and ID authorities

Samples of the new German ID card

Hanover, 4 March 2010 - The information exchanged between citizens and the administration is increasingly benefiting from innovative IT solutions. Bundesdruckerei GmbH is picking up on this topic and demonstrates how simple, fast and efficient application processes, for instance, can be shaped.

Anybody wishing to take a look into the future and find out which online services are already on offer from public administrations can visit Bundesdruckerei's booth at CeBIT and see many different sample applications. One example is the citizens' service of tomorrow which is being presented in co-operation with the booth of the Federal Government's Commissioner for IT Security.

Although the new German ID card will not be introduced until 1 November 2010 - visitors at this year's CeBIT can already have first sample cards issued which, however, are not valid as ID. Bundesdruckerei's new data capture solutions for application procedures are presented and include an intelligent computer control system which makes it possible to easily trace all the required process steps, from data input to fingerprint and signature capture. A special camera is also integrated that enables biometric photos to be taken on site.

This not only highlights how new technologies work, CeBIT visitors will, of course, also see for themselves the areas where the new ID card can be used as electronic proof of identity and that public authorities will only be able to access ID data in documents if they have applied for state-accredited authorisation. In order to secure each citizen's right to informational self-determination, Bundesdruckerei will equip around 6,500 German registration offices in the coming months with the required infrastructures as well as new hardware and software components.

The innovative solutions for mobile pre-enrolment are likely to be of particular interest in this context. Anybody who, for health reasons, is unable to go to the registration office will be able to use mobile data capture devices, such as Visotec® Mobile 100, or a visionary iPhone application. This would mean for the first time ever that personal and biometric document data could be captured no matter where.
