Looking to the future at Bundesdruckerei:
Electronic license plates and ultra-thin displays
At CeBIT 2009, Berlin-based company to demonstrate the possibilities of electronic documents
Berlin / Hanover, 2 March 2009 - What makes electronic ID cards secure? How do the complex processes and methods behind the new applications for electronic documents work? These are the central questions which Bundesdruckerei GmbH will be answering at this year's "CeBIT" (Hall 9, D 80) in Hanover. Visitors to the booth of Berlin-based Bundesdruckerei will be able to try out the applications possible with the electronic ID card in the fields of eBusiness, eGovernment and eAdministration. Using easy-to-understand examples, the company will also explain the underlying secure transaction processes. The highlights at Bundesdruckerei's booth this year will be the electronic motor vehicle card, a controllable license plate, ultra-thin displays in ID documents, as well as Bundesdruckerei's new services as an ID Provider, for instance, for online business.

Try out the possibilities offered by electronic ID cards
No long waiting times for vehicle re-registering? No more queuing at the citizens' office? Electronic forms of ID, such as the European Citizen Card or the electronic ID card, can make this dream come true, at least with some public agencies. At this year's CeBIT, Bundesdruckerei will demonstrate the possibilities offered by state-of-the-art electronic ID documents and will explain the benefits for citizens. One example of this is the prototype electronic vehicle re-registration process which Bundesdruckerei has developed within the scope of its "Secure Identity Berlin-Brandenburg" innovation cluster together with Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems: Visitors to the trade fair can see for themselves how a car owner can re-register his car in future via an Internet portal using an electronic ID card and a vehicle card. Bundesdruckerei offers another insight into the future by showing how, following re-registration of the vehicle, the car owner can change the electronic license plate from the comfort of home. This requires a vehicle licence place with a display and a reading device installed in the car.
Another innovative example is the online conclusion of a contract with age verification for car rentals. As a rule, the driver of a rented car must be at least 21 years of age. Using an electronic means of ID, such as the new ID card, it will be possible to furnish proof of age online. The basis for this is the so-called ID Provider, i.e. a trusted authority which confirms for the purpose of Internet business transactions that the data is correct. With its accredited trust center D-TRUST, Bundesdruckerei is such a trusted and long-standing partner.

Complex background systems become understandable
At this year's booth, Bundesdruckerei will also explain the complex technical systems without which it would not be possible to operate and protect digital identities. How does an ID Provider work? How can authorisation certificates for reading electronic documents be checked? How can I know whether a document is really genuine? Bundesdruckerei will show the benefits of modern identity verification with its Border Control Solutions and a virtual airport model: An interactive demonstration will show visitors how long, with conventional technology, they would have to wait at the border once their plane has landed and how innovative solutions, such as semi-automated and fully-automated checking processes, so-called eGates, can effectively cut waiting times.
Innovations for tomorrow and after
The highlight of Bundesdruckerei's booth are exhibits that look to the future. Visitors will see what the next generation of ID documents and the generation after will look like, for instance, ultra-thin, colour displays or colour passport photos on high-security cards. The "CeBIT" high-tech fair will be held from 3 to 8 March 2009 in Hanover. Bundesdruckerei will be present with an area of around 400 square metres in Hall 9 (Public Sector Parc), booth D 80.
