Bundesdruckerei produces 35 millionth German driving licence card

Berlin, 14 January 2009 - Today, Bundesdruckerei GmbH delivered the 35 millionth German driving licence card. This is another product from Bundesdruckerei which has become a huge success.

Since 1999, driving licences in Germany have been issued in credit-card format. Bundesdruckerei produces the entire document, manufactures the card body and personalises the licences in a centralised procedure. Numerous security features protect the document against misuse and manipulation. The German driving licence is one of the securest world-wide - and this makes life particularly hard for forgers.

As recently announced, Bundesdruckerei will continue to produce the German EU driving licence card also after 2011. The company plans on producing up to three million driving licence cards annually and on enhancing the cards further by integrating new security features.

Driving licence holders will continue to benefit from important advantages. An express procedure, for instance, is available if an EU driving licence card has to be applied for at short notice. As a rule, the driving licence is ready for collection within one working day. In addition to sending the cards to driving licence offices, it is also possible for citizens to have their driving licences sent directly to their homes. This saves applicants from having to go back to the driving licence office a second time.

The cards are made of an environment friendly plastic material (polycarbonate) that can be reused without difficulty.
