Cooperation with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

SecurityLab Berlin (IZM)

One important milestone on the way to developing internationally competitive and future-orientated products and solutions and establishing a new "Secure Identity" innovation and competence centre in Berlin-Brandenburg was achieved in July 2007 when the first German SecurityLab (lab for high-security applications) was opened in Berlin. The future lab was established by Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) and Bundesdruckerei with the mission to develop new technologies and security methods for chip-based ID security documents.

Besides experience and expertise in the field of complex identification systems, Bundesdruckerei is contributing its innovation concepts for ID security documents of the next generation and for the generation after that. The Fraunhofer IZM institutes boast a wealth of expertise in the area of highly complex and strongly minimalised electronic applications. This joint expertise can be put to good use when it comes to the future integration of ultra-thin chips even in paper-based products and the printing of the resultant products. This lab co-operation will be supported by the "Smart System Integration" application centre that was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and which fosters the symbiosis between industry and research. Within the scope of this application centre, Bundesdruckerei and the Fraunhofer IZM institute also intend to develop technologies for printed polymer electronics.
