Cooperation with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

"Secure Identity Berlin-Brandenburg" innovation cluster

Co-operation with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft "Secure Identity Berlin-Brandenburg" innovation cluster

Together with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Bundesdruckerei GmbH undertook to establish the "Secure Identity Berlin-Brandenburg" innovation cluster. The new cluster - a merger between five Fraunhofer institutes, five universities, twelve enterprises and the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg - kicked off on 6 November 2008 in Berlin.

The aim of the joint research and development projects is to offer technologies, processes and products which enable the clear identification of individuals, objects and intellectual property. Identities have to be secure and protected if they are to create the trust needed in order to use identities in many different ways and simplify procedures in business, administration and daily life. This applies both to the real and the digital world. Projects range from new forge-proof ID documents to the securing of electronic business processes right through to communication between individuals and machines, as well as product and brand protection.

The projects will be financed equally by Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the participating enterprises and the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg. The first project phase will run for three years. The "Secure Identity" innovation cluster is one of a current 15 Fraunhofer innovation clusters.

Innovationscluster Sichere Identität Berlin-Brandenburg

Two visions form the basis for the work of the "Secure Identity" innovation cluster:

Future ID-card systems
Future ID cards identify their users absolutely unambiguously and cannot be forged. The holders decide which personal information they will make available to their online business partners. The future ID card, e.g. in the form of an electronic ID card, will enable the flexible and mobile connection of users and the objects to be used, such as vehicles or medical devices.

Future ID-based communication
The senders and recipients of information can be unambiguously identified in the future ? a decisive precondition for secure communication. In vehicle communications of the future, vehicle registration documents will be identified by the owner's car, ID cards will be used instead of car keys or vehicle components will be checked to ensure that these are genuine parts.

The Berlin-Brandenburg region
Fraunhofer's "Secure Identity" innovation cluster is based in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. This is where existing expertise and activities in the fields of science, applied research and business are optimally bundled. At the same time, the capital city region offers the ideal base for evaluating new applications in secure identity. The development of joint visions, the determination to implement these and joint financing with funds from the worlds of research, business and politics have created a potential in Berlin-Brandenburg, the importance of which will go far beyond the borders of the region.

The role of Bundesdruckerei
Bundesdruckerei supports the innovation cluster in many different ways. Within the scope of the cluster, research will be carried out on innovative materials, technologies and processes to protect personal identities:

  • Development of technologies for the secure use of electronic identities in the real and digital world
  • Development of secure materials and components (such as organic electronics and displays)
  • Creation of a demonstrator for technology development
  • Prototype development for mobile 3D facial recognition

Bundesdruckerei is currently working on the following projects:

  • MyID - user-centric identity management
  • SecMaTec - secure materials and technologies for polymer electronics
  • SecIntCard - new integration technologies for an ultra-thin "System on Card"
  • Memo - mobile recognition system for multi-dimensional objects.
