Issuing, amending or renewing ID documents, such as passports or visas, is part of the everyday business of embassies and consulates. Just like at registration offices in Germany, presented ID documents and identity data of applicants must be carefully checked and verified via additional database queries. A uniform technological level for national authorities abroad requires global networking capabilities and secure access to data stored by public authorities at home. With a view to the introduction of modern eDocuments, powerful and secure Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) must warrant the transmission of sensitive personal data and verification results.

The introduction of biometric technologies to visa processes presents new challenges for consulates as well. Irrespective of whether the applicants' biometric features are stored in central information systems, such as the EU's Visa Information System (VIS) or in the visa sticker itself, consular staff must safely handle a number of additional tasks using complex hardware and software solutions.
