Electronic passports from Bundesdruckerei certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security

The latest generation of German electronic passports produced by Bundesdruckerei GmbH and issued since 1 November 2007 has been certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).

BSI has issued a technical directive for the examination of EAC passports which ensures that the electronic passports (in brief: ePassports) meet with the requirements of the European Commission. Furthermore, the directive ensures the world-wide interoperability of the ePassports which include the "Extended Access Control" (EAC) feature. EAC provides special protection for fingerprint data in the ePassport.

BSI has confirmed to Bundesdruckerei that the German ePassports comply with the technical directive and hence with the requirements of the EU and the conditions for interoperability. BSI issued to Bundesdruckerei a certificate to this effect.

Bundesdruckerei is the first company world-wide to produce ePassports offering "Extended Access Control" (EAC) according to the EU's specification.
