The advance of globalisation means that an increasing number of travellers must be checked at borders and handled according to procedures which vary from country to country. At the same time, international demand for security has risen dramatically, especially after the terrorist attacks of recent years. Misuse of genuine and/or the production of forged or manipulated ID documents are leading to serious security risks. These risks must be ruled out as much as possible through efficient and secure authentication, verification and identification processes and procedures.

In order to enable efficient risk profiling at international borders, quick and reliable biometric or document-based database queries in line with globally binding security requirements must be possible. Control operations by means of reliable checking processes and clearly defined risk assessments focus on the group of so-called high-risk travellers whilst at the same time ensuring that comfort for travellers in general is maintained to the maximum extent possible.

The introduction of biometric travel documents, the establishment of biometric-based information systems (such as the Schengen Information System II) and the integration of border control and visa-issuing processes call for new, integrative and structured solution concepts.
